One of the most exciting movements in contemporary art has been the exploration of the dynamic and interactive relationship between modern art and nature, both in natural outdoor and dramatic indoor settings.
Right here in the Hudson Valley/Berkshire region, within an easy drive of each other, are eight world-class art museums that take this exploration of sculpture and nature to the limit: Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens, NY; The Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase, NY; Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY; Dia:Beacon in Beacon, NY; The Fields at Art Omi in Ghent, NY; Chesterwood in Stockbridge, MA; MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA and Artscape in Pittsfield, MA.
Each venue is in itself a spectacular setting and features monumental works by internationally renowned artists, such as Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, and Richard Serra at Dia:Beacon; David Smith, Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, Andy Goldsworthy and Isamu Noguchi at Storm King Art Center; Donald Lipski, Alexander Liberman, and Beverly Pepper at The Fields at Art Omi; and Ann Hamilton, Matthew Ritchie, and Gregory Crewdson at MASS MoCA. (Some locations feature changing exhibitions, so please call ahead for current exhibitions.)
Visited individually, each venue offers a uniquely spectacular view of art and nature; taken collectively, they offer a synergistic experience of the complete spectrum of the multidimensional ways artists from around the world have created interfaces between art and nature.
